Latisse™ Eyelash Growth

Eyelash RegrowthLatisse™ solution is a prescription treatment for hypotrichosis of the eyelashes.  Hypotrichosis is just another name for having inadequate or not enough eyelashes.  It is intended for use on the skin of the upper eyelid margins at the base of the eyelashes, and is not meant to be applied to the lower eyelid.  The medication initially was used as a drug for glaucoma (high pressure in the eyeball) but this unexpected (and some would say wonderful) side effect of growing longer eyelashes was noted.

Latisse™ is the first and only prescription treatment approved by the FDA for insufficient eyelashes, growing them longer, fuller, and darker!  Latisse™ is believed to affect the growth phase (its called anagen phase) of the eyelash hair cycle by increasing the length of this phase and increasing the number of hairs in the growth phase.  The exact way it does this is not known.

Patients may see results in 4 weeks with full results after 16 weeks.  The growth is gradual overnight, over time.

Only physicians may prescribe Latisse™  and not all physicians are fully familiar with the product.  Dr. Martin has reviewed the medical literature on Latisse™ and is prepared to prescribe Latisse™ safely.

Latisse Before and After treatmentThe most common side effects are itching and redness of the eyes but this occurs uncommonly.  Even less common is a darkening, or pigmentation on the skin close to where the Latisse™ is applied. Notably, Latisse™ is an ophthalmic product and if any gets in the eye, it is not expected to be a problem and should not be rinsed out.
